A lot of the affordable modern sofas and chairs purchased from big national retailers are made from the cheapest of materials: softwood and composite frames and poor quality foam/springs/webbing.
Although there a lot of good furniture manufacturers out there, often national retailers will have a range of hundreds of different chairs and sofas, all made in different factories around the world – so you may not know you’ve bought a poor quality sofa until a year or two later – once it starts creaking, or something snaps or breaks on the frame (…indeed, even the retailers themselves don’t know what it is they’re actually selling until they start getting complaints!).
Often, the ‘guarantee’ that comes with modern furniture only covers the frame, rather than the fixings, springs, webbing or foam/stuffings. Even when there’s been a clear manufacturing fault, the retailer will wash their hands of the customer complaint by putting the issue down to ‘settling’, ‘overuse’ or ‘damage caused by the customer’.
Unfortunately, unless you can prove otherwise, you have to either fix the problem at your own cost, or replace the furniture. As upholsterers with over 35 years experience, we’ve seen every problem imaginable, and can tell you whether it’s economically viable to repair your beloved chair or sofa.
If you’ve had a repair carried out by a furniture technician on behalf of a retailer, and you’re unhappy with the standard of work, or it hasn’t solved the problem, CONTACT US and we’ll see how we can help.
A lot of ‘repairs’ carried out in the home by these companies are quick fixes that cannot and will not last (a regular ‘quick fix’ is for a technician to stuff a small piece of foam underneath the existing seat, which ‘boosts’ the seat temporarily, until the problem presents itself again a few weeks later – it doesn’t actually solve the problem).
